Cloning with early embryos

Key ideas1 of 3

Separate before specialisation

An early animal embryo contains cells that have not yet become specialised. Cells from this embryo can be separated so that they develop into several genetically identical embryos. Each resulting embryo can then be transferred to a host mother to continue development. This process is called embryo transplantation in the specification. It begins with an embryo; it is not the same as moving a nucleus from an adult body cell.

An early embryo is split before specialisation to produce embryos transferred into three host mothers.
