Managing a compost heap
A compost heap converts suitable plant waste into material used as a natural fertiliser. Gardeners encourage decomposers by maintaining moisture, a suitable temperature and access to air. Turning the heap can bring oxygen into compacted regions. The aim is damp material rather than a waterlogged heap. Decay releases mineral nutrients into forms that can support later plant growth; compost is not a replacement for the light needed in photosynthesis.
