Factors affecting food security

Key ideas1 of 3

Compare supply with need

Food security means having enough food to feed a population. A rise in total production does not guarantee improvement if the population grows faster. Compare supply per person as well as totals, and remember that national averages hide unequal access. Changing diets can increase demand for particular foods and cause scarce resources to be transported between countries. Sustainable production must maintain the ability to feed people in future years.

Illustrative annual figures: year 1 population 2 million and food supply 1 million tonnes; year 2 population 3 million and food supply 1.2 million tonnes.
