Higher: Haber equilibrium and conditions

Key ideas1 of 3

Dynamic equilibrium in the reactor

The forward Haber reaction is exothermic: N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g). In a closed system at equilibrium, forward and reverse reactions continue at equal rates, so concentrations remain constant. The amounts are not necessarily equal. Four moles of gas on the left become two on the right. This change in gas amount and the energy change explain how pressure and temperature alter equilibrium yield.
