Steels and lightweight alloys

Controlling carbon in steel

Steels are alloys of iron containing controlled amounts of carbon and sometimes other metals. High carbon steel is strong but brittle, so it suits hard cutting edges but can fracture under a sudden impact. Low carbon steel is softer and more easily shaped, making it useful for car body panels. More carbon is therefore not always better: the appropriate composition depends on the required behaviour.

A table compares three steel types, their properties and example uses.
