Measurements made by instruments
Instrumental methods use equipment to detect and identify elements or compounds. They can be more rapid, sensitive and accurate than simple chemical tests. Sensitive means that a small amount or low concentration can be detected; it does not mean that the reading is automatically correct. Accuracy describes closeness to the true value. An analyst chooses a method that gives useful evidence for the sample and the question.
