Required practical 7: identify unknown ions

Key ideas1 of 3

Investigate a single ionic compound

Required practical 7 uses chemical tests to identify ions in unknown single ionic compounds. An ionic compound contains positive and negative ions, so plan tests for both. Start with a labelled sample and small, separate portions in clean apparatus. Make solutions where the laboratory method requires them. In this supervised practical, use eye protection, handle flames carefully and follow instructions for corrosive or harmful reagents and waste.

Original unknown sample divided into fresh portions A, B and C for separate tests.
