Choose a fair comparison
Wrap identical containers with equal thicknesses of different insulating materials. Put the same volume of hot water into each and use matching lids with holes for thermometers. Start each trial at the same water temperature. The material is the independent variable; the temperature decrease over a fixed time is the dependent variable. An unwrapped container provides a useful comparison with no added insulation.
