Attraction, repulsion and electrical discharge

Key ideas1 of 3

Forces act without contact

Two positively charged objects repel, and two negatively charged objects also repel. Oppositely charged objects attract. These electrostatic forces act across a gap, so they are non-contact forces. A suspended charged object can therefore move when another charged object approaches without touching it. The arrows in a force diagram show the force on each object, not a stream of charge travelling between them.

Pairs A, B and C display their charge signs, with no motion arrows.
