One fission can cause more fissions
Neutrons released during fission can be absorbed by other suitable nuclei and trigger further fission events. These events release more neutrons, so the process can continue as a chain reaction. Not every neutron causes another fission: some escape or are absorbed without splitting a fuel nucleus. The pattern of successive generations matters more than simply knowing that one event releases several neutrons.
