Compare energy-transfer rates
When radiation is the only energy-transfer process considered, temperature depends on the balance between absorbed and emitted power. If absorption exceeds emission, the object gains energy and its temperature increases. If emission exceeds absorption, it loses energy and cools. Compare rates in watts, meaning joules per second, rather than simply noting that radiation is arriving or leaving. Both processes can happen simultaneously.
