Reflection and material boundaries

Key ideas1 of 3

Three possible outcomes

At a boundary, a wave may be reflected back, transmitted into the next material or absorbed by the material. Absorption transfers energy from the wave to the material; for light this may increase the material’s thermal energy. More than one process can happen at the same boundary. A window, for example, can transmit much of the incident visible light while reflecting some of it.

Incident path I reaches a boundary, with paths R and T leaving it.
