Higher: inducing potential difference

Key ideas1 of 3

A changing magnetic situation

A potential difference is induced across a conductor when it moves appropriately through a magnetic field or when the magnetic field around it changes. Moving a magnet into or out of a coil is one demonstration. A stationary magnet and stationary coil produce no sustained induced potential difference. It is the change in the magnetic situation, not merely the presence of a magnet, that matters.

A magnet moving towards a coil connected to a centre-zero meter.
