Fusion builds heavier nuclei
Nuclear fusion combines lighter nuclei to make heavier nuclei and releases energy in the stages that power stars. Hydrogen fusion produces helium. Later fusion stages in suitable stars form heavier elements. A new element has a different number of protons in its nucleus, so nuclear changes can make new elements; ordinary chemical reactions only rearrange atoms and cannot do this.
