Gravity, planets and satellites

Key ideas1 of 3

Gravity maintains an orbit

Gravity is an attractive force between masses. The Sun’s gravitational force maintains planetary orbits, and a planet’s gravity maintains the orbits of its moons and artificial satellites. For the circular orbits used in this model, the gravitational force is directed towards the centre of the orbit. An orbiting object is still affected by gravity; being in space does not remove gravitational attraction.

An artificial satellite orbits Earth with gravitational force directed towards Earth.
